The Cascade Winds Symphonic Band will present the third and final concert of their 2008-2009 season May 31, 2:00 p.m. at Summit High School auditorium. This concert is free of charge, although donations are gratefully accepted.
Under the baton of new music director Dan Judd, the Cascade Winds are having an exciting season of renewed enthusiasm and ever increasing audience numbers. After an extensive tenure as a music teacher in Washington State, including election into the Washington Music Educator's 'Hall of Fame', Judd is currently Director of Bands at Summit High School in Bend. A co-founder of the Northwest Wind Symphony, an award-winning community band in Western Washington, Judd has served as a clinician and adjudicator throughout the Northwest.
This third concert of the Winds season includes a variety of band standards, solo features, orchestra transcriptions and marches that demonstrate the excitement and richness of great wind band literature. The program kicks off with razz-ma-tazz, side-slipping modulations and sliding trombones in Leonard Bernstein's "SLAVA!" The program will continue with Gustav Holst's band classic "Second Suite for Military Band in F Major", featuring strong sectional play and solos within the band from piccolo to tuba. Cascade Winds tubist Aaron Moore will perform "Tuba Tiger Rag" with the help of the singers and players in the band. The very famous Johann Strauss "Radetzky March" will conclude the first half.
Sam Hazo's soaring "Sky Is Waiting" opens the second half with a tribute to the evolution of aviation. Johan de Meij's fascinating "Symphony No. 1-The Lord of the Rings" brings to life several of the important characters and episodes of J.R.R. Tolkien's epic work. This monumental piece will call for the best from the Cascade Winds, as they aurally introduce you to Gandalf, Shadowfax, the Elvenwood and, of course, those lovable Hobbits. "The Stars and Stripes Forever" will bring the concert and the season to a rousing close.
These concerts are free, open to the public and suitable for all ages. Donations are gladly accepted. For more information visit www.cascadewinds.org or call 593-1635. Summit High School is located at 2855 NW Clearwater Drive, Bend.
